Made in New Zealand - What does it mean?

Made in New Zealand means a product is substantially transformed in New Zealand. This law applies to any business that says its products are New Zealand Made.

What is substantial transformation?

For a substantial transformation to occur there must be a:

Fundamental change in that country in form, appearance or nature such that the goods existing after the change are new and different goods from those existing before the change.

Can any company use the New Zealand Made trade mark?

No. To use the New Zealand Made trade mark a company must first comply with the country of origin guidelines in the Fair Trading Act. They must then apply for a licence through the Buy New Zealand Made Campaign.

Can I buy any of the stickers and swing tags with the Buy NZ Made logo if I do not hold a licence

No - only current Buy NZ Made licence holders can use the stickers and swing tags

How is the Campaign Funded?

The Campaign is run by business for business. The majority of funds raised from licence holders are used to market the trade mark. We receive no Government funding.

Who certifies that my products are New Zealand Made?

Responsibility for a correct claim lies with the manufacturer. The manufacturer must certify that the products comply with the Fair Trading Act - Country of Origin.

Members of Buy NZ Made have exclusive access to the iconic and incredibly well recognised 'Kiwi in the triangle' logo, to help sell products or promote NZ made goods in retail space.  Over 95% of consumers recognise the iconic logo which has been around for over 20 years, promoting support of New Zealand manufactured goods and services.

We understand how business works and how busy things can get, thats why our services are simple and easy to access, our newsletters are quarterly and only carry important information and our team are availabel to you at any time to give advice or put you in touch with assistance from other business support organisations.

What does it cost to Join the Buy NZ Made Campaign.

The cost of joining the campaign is dependent on the following:-

  • The licence category
    • Your staff number or
    • How many stores you own or
    • Your annual turnover.

The licence categories available for new members are:-

Manufacturer Licence

Market Licence

Retailers:-

Costs for each category:-

Full Licence 

  • $10.00 for each staff member with a minimum of $150.00 and a maximum of $5000.00
  • 20% discount available for members of Business New Zealand affiliated industry groups, EMA, Canturbury Chamber of Commerce and Otago Southlands Employers association.
  • Our licence year runs from the 1st of July to 30th of June, therefore fees are pro-rated to reflect the months remaining until 30 June.
  • $75.00 once only registration fee applies at time of application.
  • All current licence holders are automatically invoiced for a full year in July.
  • Prices are exclusive of gst.

Cottage Industry Licence

  • This is for small or start-up business with an annual turnover of less than $150,000
  • Cost = $75.00 per annum
  • The fees in this category are not pro-rated and there is not registration fee.
  • Licence holders in this category are not automatically invoiced in the new member year and have to re-apply for this category each year.
  • Prices are exclusive of gst.

Retail Licence

  • Cost = $50.00 per 5 stores i.e. 1-5 stores = $50.00, 6-10 stores = $100.00 etc
  • Retail licences are not pro-rated and do  not incur a registration fee.
  • Retail licence holders are not able to label products with the Buy NZ Made Logo.
  • Prices are exclusvie of gst

Farmers Market Licence

  • Cost = $220.00 per market
  • Stall holders selling NZ Made products are able to label products with the kiwi-in-a-triangle logo stckers at the market only.
  • The market must ensure the logo is being used correctly by their stall holders.
